Engineering Manager – Development & Test

Location: Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK

Personal Profile and Experience

In the role of Engineering Manager – Development & Test, you’ll be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of our Development & Test function; providing project leadership to successfully deliver projects, as well as supporting those of others.

You’ll be operating in a fast paced project environment, needing technical, commercial and customer management skills whilst collaborating with some of the most innovative people, companies, and technologies on the planet. What you will need

  • Degree educated in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline OR equivalent experience and track record
  • Extensive experience of automotive powertrain development including both rig & vehicle-based test programmes as well as specification and use of instrumentation & PC based data acquisition systems
  • Excellent understanding of automotive transmission test techniques, instrumentation and automotive electronics
  • Experience with engineering tools such as Matlab, Labview, DIAdem, CAN bus knowledge and related software (Vector CANape, ETAS INCA)
  • Leadership of large and/or multi-disciplinary projects
  • Experience testing transmissions and drivelines – component, subsystem and assembly and automotive hybrid/electric vehicle systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work within internal teams and with customers and experience of line management
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and detailed reporting capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate technical progress to senior engineering staff and customers
  • Confident with customers and suppliers, able to detail requirements and understand issues

Key Responsibilities

Project coordination

  • Ensure smooth running of all Development and Test projects
  • Report project progress to plan – mitigate project risks and implement recovery actions as required
  • Ensure external requirements, e.g., external facilities, lease/purchase of hardware are planned and are on track

Resource planning and coordination

  • Manage resource requirements for all projects within the function and maintain resource tracking documentation
  • Identify external resource needs and manage resource requests
  • Day to day responsible for workload allocation within the function
  • Resolve resource (people and/or rigs) conflicts when required

Hardware resource planning

  • Develop understanding of rig capability and flexibility
  • Manage rig and equipment resource allocation to ensure maximum rig utilisation
  • Ensure the most appropriate rig is employed based on project requirements whilst maintaining flexibility
  • Oversee fixture design and test cell layout. Manage and maintain the test cell CAD database

 Project Delivery

  • Perform test and development activities including test and software set up, test execution and data analysis to ensure high quality delivery of test programmes
  • Where appropriate, undertake Project Management role; leading a project team to deliver a successful project outcome; from both technical and commercial perspectives
  • Where appropriate, undertake Project Director role on projects within the function and be accountable for their outcome
  • Working with the Chief Technical Specialist oversee project planning and ensure the following are successfully executed:
    • Prepare test plan and specifications
    • Specify test rig requirements including instrumentation and fixture tooling
    • Specify and prepare data logging equipment, instrumentation and wiring requirements
    • Support DFMEA reviews

Quality systems

  • Ownership of Development and Test quality processes and systems
  • Continuous improvement of quality processes and systems
  • Internal auditing of quality processes and systems
  • Take an active role in the continuous improvement initiatives within the Development and Test function
  • Ensure learning from projects is captured and embedded into the quality processes and systems

General Responsibilities

  • Application of technical knowledge and experience to provide innovative engineering solutions to meet a variety of customer requirements
  • Identify problems in a timely manner and ensure the best engineering solutions are applied
  • Present and communicate technical and commercial information, clearly and concisely, both internally and to customers
  • Generate and maintain relationships with customers at an appropriate level
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with peers, business development and technical leaders
  • Support the business development team in the creation of technical project proposals and resourcing estimates
  • Being fully aware of and actively complying with Drive System Design’s policies and procedures
  • Exhibiting a passion for learning and facing new challenges
  • Understands and follows DSD’s values and professional standards and technical best practises project management, quality, communication etc.
