Principal Engineer – Control Systems

Location: Farmington Hills, Michigan USA

In the role of Principal Engineer – Control Systems, you’ll be responsible for providing project leadership to successfully deliver your own projects, as well as supporting those of others. You’ll support the wider engineering team, ensuring they are developing skills and capabilities that grow them and the function as a whole.

What you will need

You will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical, electrical, electronic or control system engineering or related discipline OR equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • At least +10 years’ experience in control systems development with software packages and tools relevant to controls engineering (Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow)
  • Understanding of the mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems that make up hybrid and/or EV powertrains.
  • Working knowledge of ASPICE and ISO 26262 safety standards in automotive programs.
  • Experience developing various AUTOSAR modules such as DCM, ADC, Watchdog Manager, MCU
  • Experience working with embedded software development, C programming.
  • Background with debuggers, compilers, IDEs, programmers, emulators, etc.
  • Project Management experience involving electrified and/or hybrid systems projects.
  • Able to create and follow key engineering processes and procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to quickly understand complex technical concepts.

Key Responsibilities

You will be:

  • Design and development of control software models in MATLAB / Simulink, including requirements capture, design and verification
  • Make and contribute to software architecture decisions that facilitate the development of efficient and effective control software for electric machines and drive units across automotive, commercial transport, off-highway, and aerospace sectors
  • Create plant models for various hydro-electro-mechanical systems for SiL, MiL & HiL testing of software
  • Perform software and calibration development on real hardware in test cells and in vehicles
  • Generate formal reports, documentation and technical communication and deliver it effectively to customers
  • Application of technical knowledge and experience to provide innovative engineering solutions to meet a variety of customer requirements
  • Manage and deliver internal and external projects to a high standard within time and cost constraints
  • Identify problems in a timely manner and ensure the best engineering solutions are applied
  • Where appropriate, undertake Project Lead role; leading a small/medium project team to deliver a successful project outcome; from both a technical and commercial perspective
  • Provide direction and guidance for a growing department across the entire product development lifecycle by supporting and developing engineers within the Control Systems group
